Architecture & Technology Advisory

Before you commit budget to a build get a second opinion from engineers who'll say what they actually think.

Big technical decisions — rebuilds, scaling plans, vendor proposals, technology choices — are often made under pressure, without an independent perspective. We provide architecture reviews, product strategy input, and CTO-level advisory to help you make these calls with evidence instead of guesswork, before they become expensive to reverse.

Where Technical Decisions Go Wrong

The cost of a bad architecture or vendor decision is rarely visible until much later.

Stack Chosen by Trend, Not Fit

Technology gets picked because it's popular or familiar to one engineer — not because it matches the team's skills or the product's actual needs.

Scaling Issues Found the Hard Way

Bottlenecks only surface once they cause an outage during a traffic spike — by which point the fix is urgent and expensive.

No One to Evaluate a Vendor's Proposal

A vendor presents a technical plan and cost estimate, but no one in-house has the experience to assess whether it's appropriate.

Roadmaps Built Without Feasibility Checks

Product plans get built around what's desirable, without anyone weighing in on what's technically realistic — or what it will cost.

Expensive Build-vs-Buy Calls Made Alone

Founders decide to build something in-house — or buy an expensive platform — without an outside view of the long-term cost of either path.

Early Architecture Choices That Stick

Decisions made in the first few months of a product become deeply embedded — and increasingly expensive to change — long before anyone revisits them.

What's Included

Engagements are scoped to the decision at hand — these are the areas we draw from.

Architecture Reviews

A structured assessment of your current system, identifying real bottlenecks and risks.

Product Strategy Input

Feasibility and cost review of roadmap items before they're committed to.

Technology Selection

Evaluating frameworks, platforms, and tools against your team's actual needs and skills.

Scaling Plans

Identifying where current architecture will strain under growth, and what to do about it.

CTO-Level Advisory

Ongoing or one-time access to senior technical judgment for teams without an in-house CTO.

Vendor Proposal Reviews

Independent evaluation of another vendor's technical plan and cost estimate.

Build-vs-Buy Analysis

Comparing the real long-term cost and risk of building versus buying or extending a tool.

Written Findings & Walkthrough

A documented report plus a live session to discuss recommendations and next steps.

How a Consultation Engagement Runs

From an initial scoping call to a documented, actionable plan.

01
Week 1

Scoping Call

We discuss the decision you're facing, what's at stake, and what information and access we'll need to review it properly.

02
Week 1-2

Discovery & Review

We review the relevant code, architecture, infrastructure, or proposal documents in detail.

03
Week 2

Stakeholder Conversations

Short interviews with your team to understand constraints, history, and goals that aren't visible in the code alone.

04
Week 2-3

Analysis & Findings

We identify the specific bottlenecks, risks, or feasibility issues relevant to the decision at hand.

05
Week 3

Written Recommendations

A report with prioritized, evidence-based options and the tradeoffs of each, in plain language.

06
Week 3-4

Walkthrough & Follow-Up

A live session to discuss the findings, answer questions, and plan next steps — with availability for follow-up as decisions are made.

How a Typical Engagement Plays Out

A representative walkthrough of how an architecture review can change a major decision before money is committed.

The Situation

A startup with a small engineering team and modest user base was about to commit to a six-month rebuild proposed by an external vendor, who recommended splitting the existing application into a microservices architecture. The proposal was based on the application being "hard to maintain" — but no one on the founding team had the experience to evaluate whether that diagnosis, or the proposed fix, was actually correct for their stage.

The Approach

We reviewed the existing monolithic codebase directly, talked through the team's day-to-day pain points, and looked at the actual traffic and scaling data. The review found specific, fixable issues — a handful of slow database queries, an inefficient background job setup, and some tightly coupled modules — none of which required a full architectural rewrite to fix.

What Changed
  • The six-month rebuild was paused pending the review's findings
  • A targeted set of fixes addressed the specific bottlenecks identified
  • Tightly coupled modules were restructured incrementally, without a full rewrite
  • A phased plan was documented for when service separation might genuinely be needed
The Outcome

The team avoided committing months of engineering time and budget to a rebuild that wasn't needed at their current scale, while still addressing the real issues that were causing friction — and they now have a documented plan for if and when their architecture genuinely needs to evolve.

Why Choose Softwares Tech

An outside perspective with no incentive to sell you a bigger project than you need.

Independent, Vendor-Neutral

We're not selling you a rebuild — our recommendations are based on what your system and team actually need.

Senior Engineers, Direct Conversations

You work directly with people who've built and maintained production systems, not account managers relaying findings.

Evidence-Based, Not Opinion-Based

Every recommendation is tied back to something we found in your code, infrastructure, or data — and we show our reasoning.

Available for Follow-Through

If you decide to act on our recommendations, we can help implement them — or hand off a clear plan to your existing team.
